1. It never asks for your TikTok login
Downloading a public TikTok only needs its link. A tool that asks for your TikTok username and password, or to "log in with TikTok", wants something else: your account. Close it.
2. You can tell the real download button from ads
Free download websites make money from ads, and some ads are made to look like the site's own Download button. If a click opens a new tab, a "your phone is infected" warning or a request to allow notifications, you hit an ad. Close the tab and never allow notifications from a download site.
3. It doesn't make you install anything else
Saving a video never requires a "player", a browser extension or an extra app. On Android, be especially wary of sites offering an APK file: it skips Google Play's checks and can contain anything.
4. It comes from an official app store
Apps on the App Store and Google Play are reviewed before release, can be removed if they misbehave, and have to state what data they collect. That doesn't make every store app good, but it rules out the worst.
5. It asks only for the permissions it needs
A downloader needs to put videos into your photos, and that's about it. It has no reason to read your contacts, your location or your whole photo library. On iPhone, look for apps that ask for add-only photo access.
6. Prices are clear before you pay
Plenty of downloader apps are subscriptions. That's fine as long as you can see the price, how often you're charged and when a free trial ends before you tap anything. Reviews that say "charged right away" or "couldn't find the price" are a warning sign.
7. It has a privacy policy and a real contact
A trustworthy tool says who makes it, what it does with your data and how to reach a person. Anonymous sites with no policy and no contact have nothing to lose if something goes wrong.
